Steps
For the purposes of access and/or a feature, steps can bring a little bit of drama into a vista. The intrigue of “What’s beyond? Where does it lead?” always works well in a garden feature.
Again, materials can vary from brick, stone and timber sleepers. Wide steps can be incorporated into the terracing of a gradient, which could include beds that are easily accessed and maintained.
If the site does not have a gradient it does not mean you can not have steps. You can create steps up to a raised platform for an elevated seating area. It could be finished with a surrounding wall or handrail, or even a rockery bank with planting. In fact, on level ground, you could create one of the most interesting of all landscape features - steps down into a sunken garden.
